Gossip-mongers Are Trouble Makers: A Personal View Of Patti Warashina's Modern Clay Artwork
How does trouble in good relationships begin?
This art work is one of Patti Warashina's best clay sculptures to raise social awareness among us. Baked in low-fire, underglazed, glazed and mixed media, she has perfected her sculpting prowess with relevant messages.
She is a story teller, a humorous one. Her characters are amusing. She expresses her subconscious voice in a no-nonsense way.
Patti Warashima, based in Seattle, Washington started to experiment with clay in the 1960's. Long before she perfected her art, she has experienced several frustrations over the use of her dominant material, the clay.
A good relationship is depicted in this art. Two people talking while relaxing, enjoying each others company. One is talking, the other is attentive. An ideal friendship where both shows respect for each other.
Here comes the gossip-mongers... These two clay figurines were not even part of the real conversation. Their gestures look like they overheard something and they are straining their ears to hear more from a distance.
There goes the gossip, transferred from one ear to the next. It is interesting to note that even the crudest form of communication, like these cans, will interest many people to listen to the unfounded facts.
With the present high technology, internet and text messaging, it has provided gossip-mongers faster tools to transmit stories in a flash.
The gossip has already spread to others and it has gone over the top. As depicted in one of the characters, the story is so juicy that he placed the "can" on top of his head.
Gossip-mongers tell stories that are "unbelievable" and "awesome" at the same time! As the saying goes, news that are passed around becomes more exaggerated as it travels from one ear to the next.
The saddest of all things is when the two characters who were having a good conversation from the start got the news! They started to fight. Trust is broken. Friendship is gone.
Proverbs 25:23, "Gossip brings anger just as surely as the north wind brings rain."
The fight is so intense that there are bombs on their feet. Will they blow up each other? Who knows how this tragic relationship will end?
